AFT's main technology is in creation of optimum droplet sizes, i.e. 100-150 microns of water mist. The basic difference with respect to other mist technology is in the size of the droplets, which has made AFT”s technology unique in the field of water mist. AFT has found by their own research that the flames reflect the droplets that are too small and the droplets, which are too large often pass through the fire and make a pool of water behind the fire. Hardly, 5%-10% of water really fights fire, if the droplet sizes are too large. AFT's water-mist, with a droplet size of 100-150 micron, penetrates deep into the flame and smothers the fire at its core/root. These droplets, having penetrated into the fire, get converted in steam and expand by 1640 times to form a steam blanket over the fire to cut off air supply and at the same time takes away heat from the fire while forming steam. Thus, the fire cools down and does not re-ignite. Therefore, the fireman can attack the fire in spray mode from up-close after he shoots from a distance initially in jet mode. . These drops can be shot in a 'jet' form for handling fires from a safe distance (lancing distance) of 15-18 meters and in 'spray' mode (60 degree angle) to attack fires at a close range of 5 -7 meters for larger fire area coverage. These drops ensure quick cooling of the fire and rapid extinction by using very small quantity of water/extinguishing agent. AFT system works only on 7.5 bars of working pressure to achieve a lancing distance of 15-18 meters, as against less than 2 meters achievable by CO2 or DCP extinguishers. This low-pressure application ensures a negligible recoil and total safety of the fire fighter. This low-pressure mist technology from AFT, Germany is patented globally and has won Gold medals in Geneva and Brussels at the International inventions fairs.

CO2, DCP extinguishers are good at the ignition stage of fire. Usually, by the time one realizes the fire and gets ready to do something to put off, the fire gets into blaze. At this juncture, no TRADITIONAL extinguishers are good enough to put off blazing fire. One has to call a Fire Tender. AFT equipment can put out a blazing fire in a few seconds. Practically, AFT equipment can replace a fire tender on many occasions. The medium being mist, no collateral damage takes place and the extinguishing agent is eco friendly. This equipment is good for electrical fire, too and is certified by DNV upto 35000-v live electrical line.

The Portable systems using just 9 litres of water/extinguishing agent have been certified by European Norms EN3/DIN, with the highest ratings of B-300 (i.e. 200 liters of gasoline fire) and of A-55 (i.e. 55 sq.m area of solid fire).

Further, the Indian ABC Powder or CO2 Extinguishers do not bear the above-mentioned ratings. One uses these extinguishers without having any knowledge of the size of the fire, the extinguishers can put off. This is a big lacuna in the Indian Standard IS: 13849:1993 and in the Indian traditional fire extinguishers.

The table attached confirms that no extinguishing agent, except AFT system, is effective on all four types of fires and at the same time eco-friendly. AFT Mist Technology is proven to be suitable for A-Class, B-Class, and C-Class fires and live electrical fire of 35000-v. Since traditional extinguishers are not suitable for all types of fires, there could be confusion in case of a fire, as to what extinguishers to use, and a precious time could be wasted in identifying the right extinguisher depending on the type of fire. The situation may lead to a catastrophe, in case the wrong one is used.

ABC powder is not suitable for any Electrical/Electronics equipment as the residual powder damages the equipment internally as well as externally. The powder is so sticky that it needs to be scraped off by wire brush resulting in severe irreparable damage of the equipment. Whereas, AFT water mist system does not leave any residue on the equipment and does not result in any damage on electrical and electronic equipment and also certified for electrical fire generated from a live line of 36000 v, which is incomparable with any Indian traditional products.

Water Mist is safer than CO2 as well. According to “Mutual Factory Research, USA” there have been numerous instances of injuries and even deaths as a result of accidental CO2 discharges during routine maintenance and other situations. Water mist is not only safe, but actually improves the livability in fire areas by cooling and scrubbing the air. “Factory Mutual Research, USA”, has confirmed this. AFT extinguishing agent being a mixture of plain water and AFFF (biodegradable quality) foam is completely eco-friendly. Whereas, Dry Chemical powder is hazardous for human beings. If DCP is inhaled, it gets stuck in the lungs forever and may act as carcinogen.

AFT water mist systems are duly approved by the Chief Controller of Explosives (CCE), Nagpur and also recommended by the Ministry of Petroleum, Govt. of India for use in Retail Outlets, Petroleum Set-Ups and Oil & Gas Industries. CCE, Nagpur has also appreciated its efficiency, performance, safety, ease of operation and eco-friendliness while approving its application in the hydrocarbon industries.
